Coconut oil has become my 'must have' item in the kitchen and bathroom. It is naturally antibacterial, packed with antioxidants like vitamin E, and loaded with moisturising fatty acids. You've probably seen and heard me raving about the unrefined, raw, organic coconut oil, particularly by Lucy Bee (shop here). I'm constantly creating new ways to add this wonderful oil into my daily life, and here are just some of the ideas for you :)
Adding coconut oil to the low-fat protein sources like cod, chicken breast or egg whites, is so delicious! It works great in salads too, and my favourite dishes to cook - stews and currys (when I'm off season). Making coconut oil your kitchen staple will go a long way for your health benefits. Use it for baking, roasting veggies, pancakes, on your toast, in smoothies and everywhere else you usually add butter or vegetable oil!
- Make Up Remover
Coconut oil works like the best make up remover you'll ever come across, especially for waterproof eye make up and for sensitive skin. My skin is always turning red or itching while using make up removers, and that's why I've been avoiding them in the recent years, only sticking to the gentle Cetaphil face cleanser. Put some coconut oil on a cotton pad and wipe away. It removes the most stubborn, long wear eye and lip products.
- Hair Mask
This is the fastest way to run out of your precious coconut goodness! Yet the best thing for your hair. I'm religious about doing these hair masks at least once a month. Be generous with it and spread it from the roots all the way down to your ends. Massage into the scalp and leave overnight for the best effect. Or at least for 1-2 hours. To avoid oil stains on your pillow during the night, wrap your head in a cling film or a towel. Shampoo as usual after and you'll be pleasantly surprised with all the shine and deeply nourished result.
- Lip Mask
On the cold windy days and when your lips get a little dry, putting a thick layer of coconut oil right before bed, will give you a smooth pout once you wake up! It's my go-to trick before every bikini competition - leaving it on overnight. I know that my lipstick will look better on smooth lips and they won't crack by constantly smiling on stage.
- Shaving Cream
Yes, your razor will slide like a charm and you'll be moisturised too. As coconut oil has anti-bacterial and healing powers, even if you have a little accident while shaving, simply reapply some more on your skin!
- Body Scrub
This has also become my bi-weekly pampering treatment. Magical before and after the competition to scrub off the fake tan patches. See the full recipe here.
Since ever a little accident in the kitchen (I dropped a bit of coconut oil on the floor and my frenchie Lola went crazy for it), I've been doing more research on its benefits for dogs. Wonderful article on The Dogington Post talks about many reasons why adding raw coconut oil to your dog's diet will bring nothing but more health and smooth coat. Giving my french bulldog a tea spoon of coconut oil every other day, has been her favourite afternoon treat and without any issues in her digestion.
With so many ways to use the coconut oil, the most important part is keeping it hygienic! You check out some great tips about making your opened jar last longer on Lucy Bee's blog.
